Stump Grinding in Port Orchard, WA

We grind the stump below the surface, remove the chips, and fill the hole - so you can plant grass or build on top. Single stump or a whole row of them, across Port Orchard and the Kitsap Peninsula.

The stump is gone, the chips are gone, the hole is filled

A stump left in the yard is more than an eyesore. You mow around it, you trip over it, and it's in the way of anything you want to do with that spot - a new planting bed, a fence, a shed, a patio. On lots across Port Orchard and the Kitsap Peninsula, stumps are usually the leftovers from a tree that came down years ago, or they show up right after we take a tree down for you. Either way, we grind them out.

Here's what makes our stump grinding different: we don't just grind it and walk away. We grind the stump below the surface, remove the chips, and fill the hole. You end up with a level spot you can seed with grass or build on - not a pile of mulch and a crater to figure out.

When you need stump grinding

  • A stump in the middle of the lawn you've been mowing around for years.
  • The stump left after a tree removal you want to plant grass over.
  • A row of stumps from an old hedge or arborvitae line you want gone.
  • A stump in the way of a fence, a shed, a walkway, or a planting bed.
  • Multiple stumps from a larger clearing you're reusing the space for.

Stump grinding pairs naturally with tree removal - once the tree is down, we can grind the stump in the same project so the whole job is handled start to finish.

How we do it

We bring the grinder in and take the stump down below grade - past the surface and the top of the major roots - so there's no wood left in the way of grass or a future structure. We pull the chips out of the hole and haul them off, then fill and level the spot with material so it's flush with the surrounding ground. Single stump or several, we do them all in the visit. Once we're done, the area is ready to seed, sod, or build on.

Frequently asked questions

Do you remove the chips and fill the hole?

Yes. On stump grinding we remove the chips and fill the hole. We don't grind it and leave you with a pile of mulch and a crater. You end up with a level spot you can seed or build over.

How deep do you grind?

We grind below the surface - well past grade - so the root flare and the top of the major roots are gone. That's what lets you plant grass or put a structure, fence post, or paver over the spot without hitting wood.

Can you grind multiple stumps at once?

Yes. One stump or a whole line of them from an old hedge removal - we can do them all in the same visit. Tell us how many and roughly how big when you call.

Will you grind a stump I still have from a tree I cut down years ago?

Yes. A lot of stumps we grind are old ones people have been mowing around for years. We can take it out and fill the hole regardless of how long it's been there.

Do you take out the whole root system?

No. Stump grinding takes out the stump and the top of the major roots. The deeper roots stay in the ground and break down over time, which is fine - they're not in the way of grass, plantings, or most building projects.

Can I plant grass right after you grind?

Yes. Once we fill the hole and level it, you can seed or sod over the spot. We'll leave it ready to go.
